The Ricky Ray Rector meal just makes me incredibly sad. I just know that there are douchefaces out there laughing at the fact that he was saving his pie “for later”, but if they stopped to think about it they would realize that hey, that doesn’t sound like something a mentally sound person would say…and they would be right.
Ricky Ray Rector killed a man, and then turned himself in. In the midst of negotiating the terms of his surrender with an officer, he shot the officer to death, and then attempted suicide by turning his gun on himself. The thing is, he didn’t die; he just lobotomized himself.
Despite the fact that Rector was now mentally incompetent and had no real understanding of what was going on around him, there was a huge push for his execution. It was an election year, and presidential hopeful Bill Clinton made Rector’s execution his pet project so as to appear tough on crime. Yeah, he sent a scared, confused, mentally handicapped man to his death. Oh sorry, I meant to say he served justice.
It took the medical staff nearly an hour of prodding and collapsing this poor man’s veins before they were able to find a suitable vein for the lethal injection. This is our justice system, happy Monday, folks.
